LANSING, Mich. -- Former Rep. Peter Meijer withdrew his name from the U.S. Senate race in Michigan on Friday, ending a longshot bid to become the Republican nominee and return to Congress after being ousted by voters for supporting an effort to impeach then-President Donald Trump.

Peter Meijer dropped out of the race for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat, citing a lack of a clear path to victory.

Michigan has an open seat because of a decision by U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., to forego running for a fifth six-year term this year. In the race for the Democratic nomination, U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, is widely considered the likely front-runner, facing Detroit actor Hill Harper and Dearborn businessman Nasser Beydoun.
